re: #17 jaunte

There’s a pizza place across the street from where I work. They’ve done online ordering for awhile but recently they’ve set up an automated kiosk deal so when you order online, they put your order in what is basically a large, fresh pizza vending machine. You put the code from the online order into the machine and it opens whatever door your order is behind. You take it and leave. Zero human interaction required whatsoever.

There was also a recent X-files episode about the dangers of increased automation. Here’s a clip where Mulder and Scully are in an automated Asian restaurant:

Mulder Gets A Weird Fish | Season 11 Ep. 7 | THE X-FILES

The same episode also featured Scully taking a self driving Uber ride from hell and having her Smart Home go completely haywire on her. All of this apparently triggered by Mulders refusal to leave a good tip at the Asian restaurant.

But the final scene shows them walking to an old style diner filled with actual people, setting their phones down and actually enjoying themselves.

I was born in 1981, I’m part of the both the last pre-Internet generation and the first post-Internet generation. I remember what life was like without the internet and smartphones and while I love how convenient modern technology can be I hate that more and more it eliminates the human interaction all of us need.

I think social can do a great job of connecting someone with the world while not actually connecting them with anybody. Sure you can send messages and videos and whatnot, but it’s not the same as spending time with someone face to face.

We can’t afford to forget how to commune with one another because if, some day, all of this technology suddenly stops working, what the hell are we going to do?

While I agree with the idea that we shouldn’t fully automate, I find this silly:

We can’t afford to forget how to commune with one another because if, some day, all of this technology suddenly stops working, what the hell are we going to do?

If all this technology fails, we’re going to have way bigger issues, because we’re in the collapse of the human species.

The best thing to do would be to find out who is providing DNS & hosting services for these scum and flood them with emails until they’re shut down permanently like Der Stormer was.

The service which provides space for 8chan is Cloudflare.

Cloudflare is on record as saying they will notify anyone who reports a site because they “have the right to face their accusers.”

They also host Daily Stormer. Andrew Anglin is on record saying anyone who reports their site will regret it, as they have a lot of people on their site who would be happy to beat the crap out of them or kill them.

The only way to deal with Cloudflare (like LGF) is stop using it.

He allegedly discussed wanting to kill LAPD officers and set off explosives at the Santa Monica Pier and on LA freeways.

The man, described as a former member of the US military, allegedly voiced support for ISIS.

Investigators say he was under surveillance for weeks after he went online allegedly posting angry rants about the killing of Muslims in mosques in New Zealand.

Golly, there was a bit of excitement on an otherwise uneventful Monday. Out for mid-afternoon emptying the dog when there was hollering behind me with the word “police” in there. Oh dear. Just as I was turning to look, a young guy about spun me around whooshing past me with a uniform cop hauling ass on foot 15’ or so behind him.

Fortunately, Buddy was near me so I was able to lock his leash (16’ retractable) to keep him from getting involved, which he seriously wanted to do. He saw those guys running hard up to and close to us and so wanted a piece of them. (He’s not an aggressive boy by nature but he’s a dedicated Protector of Mom. Also, don’t fuck with a chihuahua mix.) He was all kinds of leaping and snarling at those guys. Of course, one of those guys was an armed cop so I’m all “Buddy, shut up and chill NOW!” while inwardly thinking Good Dog. Kinda felt like Danerys with her protective Drogo last night. Hey, if he could, Buddy would totally spit fire!

Modern fettuccine Alfredo was invented by Alfredo di Lelio in Rome. According to family accounts, in 1892 Alfredo di Lelio began to work in a restaurant that was located in piazza Rosa and run by his mother Angelina. Di Lelio invented “fettuccine al triplo burro” (later named “fettuccine all’Alfredo” or “fettuccine Alfredo”) in 1907 or 1908 in an effort to entice his wife, Ines, to eat after giving birth to their first child Armando. Alfredo added extra butter or “triplo burro” to the fettuccine when mixing it together for her.

I like Alfredo sauce but Italian is actually one of my least favorite cuisines. I suspect I’d feel differently if I had an Italian grandmother with original recipes. Eastern European food is my comfort food for that reason.

Leader of New Mexico armed group denied bail

[…]

When the court reconvened, Assistant U.S. Attorney George Kraehe testified that Hopkins had 11 prior felony convictions and was seen in possession of a holstered firearm as recently as February, when he met with the police chief of Sunland Park, New Mexico, where his group is camped on the border.

Kraehe said Hopkins failed to appear at seven court hearings and escaped from a penal institution during a criminal history, dating back to 1968.

“I believe the government has met its burden of showing he is a flight risk and a danger to the community,” said Molzen, ordering Hopkins to be held in custody until trial.

[…]

The charges relate to weapons the FBI found at Hopkins home in 2017, while investigating reports he was running a militia. They do not relate to any of his group’s conduct at the border.

When agents entered the home they collected nine firearms, ranging from pistols to rifles, which Hopkins, also known as Johnny Horton Jr., illegally possessed as he had at least one prior felony conviction, according to the complaint.

But this newsletter, with a staff of one, identified hundreds of ads from the Trump campaign that violated Facebook’s ad policies. Facebook removed the ads only after I brought them to its attention.

LOL, the same thing happened to my ex-wife. We were in Bologna, Italy and it was late, around midnight, and we’d had a few drinks. She ordered the filet of soul. She asked for some grated cheese for her fish.

The waiter said “No”, she asked again and he said “I’m not letting you put grated cheese on the fish, it’s wrong”, she asked a third time and he finally relented and said “Fine, here’s your grated cheese” with a tone that implied “stupid Americans” For desert she ordered the tirimisu and the waiter sarcastically replied “Are you sure you don’t want SOME GRATED CHEESE with that, Madame?”

The temple’s effort has had very uneven results. It’s just very hard for Yankees to adjust, even with support and a careful selection process. A friend of ours tried to convert to a very frum orthodoxy, even taking lessons from a Birmingham rabbi, but they ended up moving to Chicago.

That’s because a Massachusetts state judge is accused of helping an undocumented person evade an ICE officer waiting in the courthouse. She and her clerk were arrested on federal charges.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said the indictment was “a radical and politically motivated attack on our state and the independence of our courts” and that the matter could have been handled by the state Commission on Judicial Conduct and the Trial Court.

“It is a bedrock principle of our constitutional system that federal prosecutors should not recklessly interfere with the operation of state courts and their administration of justice,” she said in a statement.

cnn.com

According to a friend of mine in Boston, this case is causing great consternation. For me, it’s giving me flashbacks to when I was studying the Underground Railroad in law school and there were several notable instances when Bostonians took matters into their own hands to keep escaped slaves from notorious slave catchers after the Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850.

If you want to see how weird and crazy it can get, just read about the Fugitive Slave Act and its aftermath, then amp it up by 100 for our interconnected world.

I don’t think you need to add a multiplier. The escaped slaves would have either been tortured or killed.

Actually, they were very valuable property prior to the Emancipation Proclamation. Yes, they would have been treated VERY BADLY, probably whipped and maybe branded, but they wouldn’t be killed. Because (and I read this in Ed Baptist’s book The Half Has Never Been Told, which is an economic history of US slavery) families with slaves tended to mortgage said slaves because much of the land in the South was worth nothing without slaves to work it. This kind of mortgaging was encouraged by the banking situation after Jackson did away with the Second Bank of the United States.

No, they weren’t killing slaves. But punishing them, OH YES.

Speaking of the Underground Railroad, I think I may have heard somewhere that the tavern my third grandparents ran with their children including my second great grandfather was a stop on the Underground Railroad. I don’t know how true that is. Oh and for Dinesh D’Sousa, third great grandfather and his sons were Democrats. See, this is the narrative the right has wrong about the Civil War and they do this on purpose. They correctly point out that hte Republicans were formed to oppose the spread of slavery.
